With over 4,210 acres of both natural chapparal-covered terrain and landscaped parkland and picnic areas, Griffith Park is one of the largest municipal parks with urban wilderness areas in the United States. Griffith Park is home to dozens of varieties of recreational opportunities, including hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, soccer, tennis, and baseball fields, fitness zones, dog parks, a senior center, pools, and playgrounds. The regional park is also home to the Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles Zoo, Gene Autry Museum of the American West, Travel Town Museum, Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum, Greek Theatre, Friendship Auditorium and Los Feliz Nursery School.

The purpose of the 2013 Vision Plan was to contain ideas to be used in a future Master Plan that would be adopted by the Board of Recreation and Parks Commissioners and implemented by the Department. There were no CEQA compliance requirements included in this Vision Plan, as the intent was to evaluate the environmental impact of independently proposed projects in a future Master Plan.
The main principles of this Vision Plan were to preserve the Urban Wilderness Identity of the park, to preserve the biodiversity within the boundaries of the park, and to enhance the existing uses of the park.
The 1987 Travel Town Master Plan was created as a response to the safety concerns from the depreciating exhibits and attractions, many of which had stood at the site for nearly 40 years. Additionally, capital improvement and major programs were proposed to increase attendance and educational attainment of visitors. The 1987 Travel Town Master Plan also considered the programs and projects that were adopted in the 1979 Griffith Park Master Plan.
